Newborn Portraits

When should I book my newborn photoshoot?

Best time to reach out for newborn portraits would be during your pregnancy.

Do you shoot in your studio or at my house?

This will depend on the location of your home and your desired outcome. We will decide on this in your consultation when we plan your photoshoot.

How old should my baby be when we have the photoshoot?

Best time to photograph your newborn baby would be during the first 2 to 3 weeks of life. They are generally sleepier during this window. However, you can capture beautiful portraits at any age. My “oldest“ newborn was 2 months old and we were able to capture beautiful portraits during our portrait session.

Are siblings included?

We are always happy to include siblings in our newborn photoshoots.

Maternity Portraits

When is the ideal time for a photoshoot?

Maternity portraits are best achieved during 32 to 34 weeks of your pregnancy.

Do you shoot in your studio or at my house?

This will depend on the location of your home and your desired outcome. We will decide on this in your consultation when we plan your photoshoot.

Can you include my partner / pet / other children in my photos?

Absolutely!

Neutral light colours without busy patterns are always classic and timeless. You always have access to my studio wardrobe to help you look your best during your photoshoot.

Do you have any hair and makeup tips?

Tip 1: Stay True to Yourself

It’s often tempting to go glam for your headshots. While you can certainly use these photos as an excuse to splurge on an afternoon with your hairstylist, try not to succumb to the temptation to change your look drastically. If you straighten your usually curly hair or get a new spray tan that has you several shades darker than your typical skin tone, your headshots won’t reflect reality.

Your headshot should help you become more familiar to others so they can easily recognize you in the office from what they’ve seen online. If your headshot showcases a look that you can’t maintain in your day-to-day work environment, it can feel misleading or even off-putting. Keep your look very close to your natural appearance.

Tip 2: Plan Ahead

Start thinking about your headshots four or five days in advance. Depending on the look you’d like to present, give yourself the option to schedule a facial, shape your brows, whiten your teeth (we will also whiten teeth during the editing process), or have your hair trimmed or hair color touched up. None of these steps are mandatory, or even necessarily recommended, but if you feel that they’re necessary, you’ll want to give yourself time to schedule.

Don’t have any major grooming done the day before or the day of your shoot. You don’t want to come straight to the studio from having your brows or lips waxed, as you may end up with telltale redness on your face.

Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your shoot. Dehydration can show up as chapped lips and flaky skin. If you have chapped lips, get into the habit of using lip balm several days in advance to help them heal. Applying a healing lip balm before bed is especially beneficial. Be particularly mindful of sunscreen application in the week leading up to your shoot so you’re not dealing with a sudden burn or peeling skin from overexposure.

Tip 3: Simplify Your Makeup

While you want to keep your makeup application as close as possible to your everyday appearance, there are some exceptions to make a note of. Certain types of makeup application are particularly unflattering in headshots, even though they might look good in-person. Some key things to keep in mind are:

Heavy under-eye liner can make you look older on camera. Keep the application light if you use liner under your eyes.

Neutral eyeshadows look best for professional headshots. Avoid looks like smokey eyes, they tend to be too dramatic.

Shimmery makeup can reflect camera lighting in an unflattering way. Avoid any kind of bronzer, blush, eye shadow, or lipstick with a glittery or shimmery finish. Avoid lip gloss, as this is too shiny.

If you can hire a professional to do your makeup before the shoot, this is ideal. Make sure to tell your makeup artist that you need an application suited to studio lighting if you’re having your headshot taken indoors. If you’d like, we can also add hair and makeup as an additional service to help you get ready for your headshots.

For men, we do not recommend makeup unless you have severe acne and/or a skin condition that you’d like to minimize. Minor acne is best dealt-with in the editing process.

Tip 4: Keep Facial Hair Neat

If you typically have facial hair, there’s no need to shave it off for your headshots. However, you should make sure that it’s neatly trimmed and groomed for your photo session. If you’re usually clean-shaven, you will want to shave for your shoot. You can shave the night before if your skin is easily irritated by shaving, but you don’t want to push this task back any farther.

Tip 5: Style Your Hair Professionally

When it comes to styling your hair, you should choose a look that’s consistent with what you would present in the workplace. Think about how you typically do your hair for a job interview, important meeting, or workplace presentation. These are the types of looks you want to go for. If you’re having headshots done for an acting career, consider how you do your hair for an audition.

For longer hair, a gentle blowout with some soft volume is often best. A severe bun can look too harsh, and a ponytail or messy bun is too casual for most jobs. If you have short hair, take the time to comb and style it, using products as needed to keep it in place. Be careful with hair gel or other products that can create a glossy look that may appear wet or slick in studio lighting.

What do I wear?

Style According To Your Industry

How you should dress for a professional headshot isn’t going to be an easy one size fits all answer. That’s why photographers can’t simply tell everyone to wear a black blazer. In fact, for some industries and some people, wearing a black blazer is the worst decision.

Think About How You Would Dress In A Meeting With The Person You Want To View Your Headshot.

Now that you’ve thought about the industry that you’re in and the types of clothing that people wear in your industry, I want you to now really start thinking about who these headshots are for? Are you getting these headshots to stand out in your own company? Who is the decision maker when you’re being considered for a promotion? Are you creating these images for a casting director? If so, what types of roles are you typically aiming for? Do you run your own business, and have clientele that fits a certain mold or a target audience that you want your headshot to resonate with?

Now that you’ve answered that question, I am going to give you the best tip for narrowing in on what you should wear while still staying true to who you are. Think about what you would wear with the type of person that you’re creating your headshot for. What would you wear to a meeting with them? What would you wear if you took them out for coffee? What would you wear if you took them out for drinks? Whatever came to mind for you just then, is the type of clothing that you should aim to wear in your professional headshots.

In general, avoid busy patterns, large logos, wear clothing that’s fitted and gives you shape

When in doubt, bring multiple outfits and we can decide before we start.

Is hair and makeup available?

Absolutely.

Can you come to my office to shoot these photos?

Yes. This is a possibility if you have a large group of individuals. Please reach out to discuss further.

Children and Teens

What should my child wear?

This is SUPER FUN for our children! They get to dress themselves! Get creative, put on the all the layers, wear all the hair clips and super hero capes! Bring all of their favorite things! Our goal to document their spirit at this wonderous age! Where there are infinite possibilities and imaginations runs wild.

What can we expect from a Blair Ann Photoshoot?

A fun-filled short photoshoot for your children and yourself! Get ready for all the laughter. Let them be themselves, kids are naturally photogenic, so let them be themselves and capture their true personalities. We will start the photoshoot after they’ve sometime to get to know the studio space, after which, they get to strike a pose in front of the camera with fun prompts! Right after, we will sit down together to decide on the images you’d like to take home.

How can we prepare before we arrive?
  1. Before the photoshoot, have a conversation with your kids to discuss what to expect. Explain why you're taking photos and how they will be used. Talk about the location, the photographer, and what they'd like to wear. Answer any questions they may have and make sure they feel comfortable with the process.
  2. Practice some simple poses with your child before the photoshoot. This will help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera and give them an idea of what to expect. You can also practice smiling and different facial expressions.
  3. Make sure to bring their favourite snacks!
  4. Props can be a great way to add personality and fun to photoshoots. Bring along some props that your child loves, such as a favorite toy or stuffed animal. This will help them feel more relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera.
How do I book if I have more than one child?

We will book one session for all of your children that you'd like photographed. Just let me know how many children you have apon booking so we can plan accordingly.
